HISK ALUMNI OPEN BRIEF  

Wij, de HISK Alumni en supporters, zijn geschokt en diep teleurgesteld door de beslissing van de Vlaamse regering om de financiering van het HISK vanaf 2023 in te trekken.Als laureaten van het HISK hebben we uit eerste hand ervaring met het uitstekende onderwijstraject dat het Instituut biedt en betwisten we uitdrukkelijk de stelling dat het HISK “geen unieke meerwaarde” biedt. 

Sinds 25 jaar is het HISK een internationaal gerenommeerde onderwijsinstelling met zijn thuisbasis in Gent. Het intrekken van de financiering zou de kostbare inspanningen in het bouwen van deze unieke en vruchtbare leeromgeving tenietdoen. Het HISK is een instituut waar zorgvuldig geselecteerde kunstenaars uit alle disciplines en met diverse achtergronden na hun masteropleiding gedurende twee jaar over een eigen studio beschikken en een opleidingstraject volgen met veel aandacht voor gedeelde inzichten en kennis. Gedurende die tijd biedt het HISK een programma aan van atelierbezoeken door een scala aan nationale en internationale kunstenaars, curatoren en academici.In het HISK kregen we de kans om onze diverse praktijken inhoudelijk verder te ontwikkelen en te verfijnen wat we als kunstenaars de wereld insturen.  Door het geavanceerde peer to peer leren, koestert het HISK een ondersteunende en inclusieve gemeenschap die onze levens en carrières nog vele jaren daarna verrijkt. Onze praktijken hebben zich ontwikkeld in diepte en complexiteit, we hebben geleerd te verfijnen wat we als kunstenaars in de wereld zetten en hoe we ons kunnen engageren met een gevarieerd publiek in Vlaanderen, België en de rest van de wereld.

We erkennen dat het bestuur van het HISK de afgelopen jaren aan visie ontbrak. Wij vinden dat een HISK 2.0 diverse stemmen moet vertegenwoordigen binnen een transparante structuur. Wij, als alumni, vinden echter dat de kwaliteit van het onderwijs door het HISK zwaarder weegt dan zijn organisatorische problemen en vinden dat het HISK als onafhankelijke, niet-academische onderwijsinstelling moet blijven bestaan. Wij alumni bieden aan om een adviserende rol te spelen bij de hervorming van het instituut.

De onderwijsvorm en infrastructuur die het HISK biedt, levert geen studiepunten of cijfers op. Niettemin is het een onderwijsvorm die werkt, dat blijkt wel uit het feit dat de meesten van ons een sterke carrière in de kunstwereld hebben, lesgeven aan kunstscholen, doctorale onderzoeken voeren en nationaal alsook internationaal tentoonstellen. Wij zijn ervan overtuigd dat het Belgische culturele landschap ernstig zal lijden en aan reputatie zal inboeten indien het HISK gedwongen wordt zijn deuren te sluiten. 

Hoe zal de rijke artistieke en culturele traditie van Vlaanderen verder floreren als de artistieke grond wordt ontworteld?

Wij roepen de Vlaamse minister van Onderwijs en het parlement op om de beslissing om het HISK niet meer te financieren terug te draaien en hun (tot nu toe) uitmuntende mecenaat voor het kunstenonderwijs verder te zetten.

LETTRE OUVERTE DES LAURÉAT·E·S DU HISK

Nous, les lauréat·e·s du HISK, sommes choqué·e·s et profondément déçu·e·s par la décision du gouvernement flamand de retirer le financement du HISK d'ici 2023.En tant que lauréat·e·s du HISK, nous avons une expérience directe de l'excellent parcours éducatif que l'Institut offre et nous nous opposons à l'affirmation selon laquelle le HISK n'apporte "aucune valeur ajoutée unique".

Depuis 25 ans, le HISK est une institution de renommée internationale. Retirer son financement signifierait détruire le travail précieux qui a été investi dans sa construction. Cet environnement d’apprentissage singulier a contribué significativement au niveau élevé de l’art et de la culture en Belgique et à son rayonnement au-delà des frontières. Le HISK est un institut d'études supérieures pour les arts visuels basé à Gand. Des artistes sélectionnés venant de disciplines, d’horizons et d’origines variées se côtoient pendant deux ans, bénéficiant chacun·e d’un atelier individuel et d’espaces de travail collectifs. Pendant cette période, le HISK propose un programme de visites d'atelier par une multitude de professionnel·le·s de l’art, nationaux et internationaux. Nous y avons forgé nos premiers liens avec des centres d’arts, des musées et des galeries, nous y avons pratiqué l’art de planifier et de mener à bien des expositions.

Grâce à un apprentissage avancé entre pairs, le HISK favorise la création d’une communauté solidaire et inclusive qui continue d’enrichir nos vies et nos carrières pendant de nombreuses années. Notre travail s’y est développé en profondeur et en complexité, nous y avons appris à affiner notre œuvre et à communiquer avec des publics divers en Flandre, en Belgique et dans le reste du monde.

Nous reconnaissons que le conseil d'administration du HISK a manqué de vision ces dernières années. Nous pensons qu'un HISK 2.0 doit inclure des voix plurielles et une structure transparente. Cependant, en tant que lauréat·e·s, nous avons la certitude que la qualité éducative du HISK l’emporte sur ses problèmes organisationnels et nous soutenons qu’il devrait continuer à exister en tant qu’institut éducatif non académique indépendant. Ainsi, nous nous proposons de jouer un rôle consultatif dans la réforme de l'institut. Le format éducatif et l'infrastructure que pourvoit le HISK ne sont pas basés sur des crédits ni des notes. C’est pourtant un système qui fonctionne, comme le prouve la grande majorité des lauréat·e·s qui mène des carrières importantes dans le monde de l'art, en tant qu’enseignant·e·s dans des écoles d'art, conduisant des doctorats et exposant tant au niveau national qu’international. Nous sommes convaincu·e·s que le paysage culturel belge et sa réputation souffriront considérablement si le HISK est contraint de fermer ses portes.

Comment la Flandre pourra-t-elle s'épanouir en tant que terre artistique fertile en se coupant ses propres racines ?

Nous demandons au ministre flamand de l'éducation et au parlement d'annuler la décision de retirer le financement du HISK et de poursuivre leur (jusqu'à présent) excellent mécénat de l’éducation artistique.

We, the HISK Alumni, are shocked and deeply disappointed by the decision of the Flemish Government to withdraw funding from the Higher Institute of Fine Arts (HISK) by 2023. As laureates of HISK, we have first-hand experience of the excellent art education the Institute offers and oppose the statement that HISK provides “no unique added value”.

For 25 years HISK is an internationally renowned art institution. Withdrawing funding would mean destroying valuable work and investment that has been put into building a unique art institution that has significantly contributed to the high standard of art and culture in Belgium and beyond.HISK is a studio-based postgraduate institute for visual arts based in Ghent. Selected artists from various disciplines, backgrounds and countries intermingle for two years under one roof. During that time HISK offers a program of studio visits with a broad range of national and international art professionals. First contacts with Museums and Galleries are made, and the art of planning and executing an exhibition is practiced. Through advanced peer to peer learning, HISK has fostered a supportive and inclusive community enriching our lives and careers for many years after. Most importantly, our practices have developed in-depth and complexity. We learned to refine what we as artists put out into the world and what impact we want our work to have on varying audiences in Flanders, Belgium and the rest of the world.

We acknowledge that the board of the HISK has lacked vision in recent years. We believe HISK 2.0 must include diverse voices and a transparent structure. However, we as alumni think that the quality of the education by HISK outweighs its organizational problems and believe that it should continue as an independent, non-academic educational institution. We alumni offer to take an advisory role in the reforming of the institute.

The form of education and infrastructure HISK provides is neither credit nor grade based, yet it is a format that works, proved by the large majority of us holding strong careers in the art world, teaching in art schools, conducting Phds and exhibiting nationally and internationally. We strongly believe that the Belgian cultural landscape will significantly suffer and lose its reputation if HISK is forced to close its doors.

How will Flanders flourish as a rich artistic ground by cutting its roots?

Therefore, we call on the Flemish minister of Education and the parliament to reverse the decision to defund the HISK and continue their (up until now) stellar patronage of art education.
